ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair: Everything You Need to Know
As the name suggests, this King Kong chair is engineered specifically for rugged use by those who are a little bigger. The 600D polyester fabric this chair is made from is extremely tough, and also water repellent. The powder-coated alloy steel frame only adds to the strength of this chair.
The overall size of the chair is what makes it great for a wide variety of people, and if you find you often need a bigger chair when sitting by the fire, than this chair is perfect for you! The seat is a little over 2 feet wide, giving plenty of room for comfort!
You can also choose from 16 different colors, so there is no more worrying about having to mark the tags with a sharpie on each chair with the persons initials!
One of the amazing features about this chair is its storage! Most camp chairs you find are only going to have one cup holder built into one of the arm rests, and this is always frustrating. With the King Kong chair, you get one cupholder on each arm rest, as well as a large side pocket on each side of the chair.
Another storage feature that I bet you haven’t seen before, is the mesh pocket on the back of the chair! All of this fits into a convenient shoulder carry bag similar to that of many other camp chairs.
At this point, you may be thinking that this chair is going to be extremely overpriced for what it is, after all, many things that sound or appear to be too good to be true, most likely have a catch to them.
However, in this case, you’re in luck! The King Kong chair comes in at roughly $80, and compared to other chairs of this caliber, that’s a hard deal to beat!
Our Thoughts on the ALPS King Kong Heavy-Duty Chair
Ask anyone who has used this chair at some point or another, and I guarantee they are all satisfied and often surprised by its comfort! This chair not only does what it says it can do, but it goes above and beyond!
For what it is, and from experiences in the past, I was a little skeptical. I have sat in chairs that claim to be comfortable and rugged, yet I just wasn’t satisfied with it. The King Kong chair, however, was perfect!
The only thing that was notable as being kind of frustrating were the cupholders and the weight. In regards to the cupholders, they were just too small for some of my drinks, so I had to either hold them or set them on the ground.
Other chairs out there have the really large cupholders that are made for large drinks or cups, so that is something to think about when looking at this chair.
In terms of weight, it is a heavy chair compared to other ones that I own. It is definitely not made to be carried a long way, or put in a backpack for a long hike.
With the super strong nature of this chair, however, this issue is pretty easily justifiable for me. You may not feel the same way, but the weight is definitely not a major issue that would prevent me from buying it again.
One thing I dislike about some camp chairs out there is how they can be difficult to store or carry. Some of the chairs I have seen simply fold flat, which is a good design on paper, but more often than not they end up being extremely awkward to pack into the back of a truck. Fingers will also get pinched in these style chairs as well, which we all know is just the worst!
The classic shoulder strap bag most chairs come in is perfect, but these chairs are often flimsy and not built well overall. The Alps Mountaineering King Kong chair comes with the shoulder bag we are all used to, so carrying and storing it will be no issue! By combining durability, ease of use, size, and packability, the King Kong really got everything right!
I truly think this is going to be the best chair for those who want a little more room and durability when they are using this chair.
Pros and Cons of ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair?
What Makes this Heavy-Duty Chair a Must-Have
The ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair is one of the best chairs that I have seen on the market in recent years. A lot of bigger people that like to go camping or sit around the fire in your backyard, often struggle finding a chair that is good for what they need.
The sheer strength and toughness of this chair is what makes it great for those people, all while providing maximum comfort! The strong material will be able to hold up against wear and tear over many years, unlike the cheaply made chairs we remember using while they were falling apart.
For the overall value of this chair, not only in terms of price, but also functionality and durability, you won’t be able to find something like this just anywhere. A lot of chairs of this caliber can run upwards of $300, and for most people, that is a crazy amount of money to spend on a camp chair. This is where the King Kong shines.
Downsides of the ALPS Mountaineering Chair
While this chair has very few issues with it, it does have its disadvantages. The small cupholders can be frustrating for those who use big cups, or, if you are like me, sometimes like to put my phone or other things in them.
The weight of this chair is also going to be a burden on those who have to carry this chair a ways, but is justified because of the toughness of the chair and how it is built.

What Would Make this Heavy-Duty Camping Chair Even Better?
I believe that there is not a ton that would make this chair a whole lot better, but the one thing I see on other chairs, and something I have used and really enjoyed, is a little side table!
I don’t know about you, but having a little folding table built into my chair is something I always use, and never set the chair up without also opening the table. While the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong chair does not come with one of these standard, it would be really great if it did!
Is the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair for Me?
For those who like a little more comfort and are a bit bigger than your average cream of the crop, this chair is going to be a great option when looking into durable chairs that will last. Even for those who aren’t bigger, this chair is still going to be an amazing choice for rugged use in a variety of ways.
How Does the ALPS King Kong Heavy Duty Chair Compare to Other Heavy Duty Camping Chairs?
When compared to other heavy duty camp chairs, the King Kong has the upper hand in many aspects. Let’s take a quick look at the Yeti Hondo Base Camp Chair compared to the King Kong chair.
|Yeti Hondo Base Camp:||King Kong:|
|17 pounds||13 pounds|
|26.5″W x 30.1″D x 32.3″H||38″ W x 20″ D x 38″ H|
|Holds up to 500 pounds of weight||Holds up to 800 pounds of weight|
Just from this base comparison, we can see how the King Kong is superior to the Yeti in many ways. Even looking at the picture of the Yeti chair, it just looks uncomfortable! Not to mention it costs $300, and doesn’t even have half of the functions the King Kong does, and weight 17 pounds is just ridiculous for a camp chair!
So for $80, the King Kong chair is one of the best options when it comes to a heavy duty chair.
Best Camping Chair Buying Advice
Uses: When buying a camp chair, there are a few main factors to consider. The biggest of these is going to be what you plan on using it for. A camp chair for backpacking is going to have to be much different than one you would get just to use in the backyard.
This also ties into the strength of the chair you may need. If you are going to be using it quite often, than spending the money to get something a little more durable is going to be worth the money in the long run.
Design: Think about what kind of chair you want in terms of design. Do you want it to be a classic fold up into a shoulder bag chair or one that folds flat? Would you prefer the material to be breathable or not? What color would you like?
All of these are questions you need to be asking yourself what is going to be the best choice for you.
Price: Do your research! Many people just go buy the first deal they see at the store, but there are probably better choices that you can find that will better suit your needs.
Look online at reviews, just like this one, and figure out what is going to be best for you. Set a budget and see what you can find in that price range. There are a ton of great chairs that cost an arm and a leg, but there are alternatives to everything!
